Embracing change in the workplace

Embracing change in the workplace has become a necessary skill for workers in 2022 and beyond. As the world acclimatises to a post-Covid-19 normal, companies and professionals have been, in one sense, forced into the future of work.

It’s a future where work is often location agnostic, and where the focus is on outcomes to keep organisations moving forward.

Here are our tips for getting the most out of changes in your workplace:

Maintain a positive attitude

Regardless of the new situation, it is always important to be optimistic and maintain a good attitude at work. Having a positive outlook means that you can provide support to your team, who are also going through this change, and it shows the leadership team that you are willing to adapt.

Have an open mind and make change work for you

Change can open up more opportunities. Having an open mind allows you to identify and grab these new opportunities. This could include developing your skillsets both professionally and personally. Keep your eyes open to ways you can leverage new learning opportunities, or how your skillset can apply to other areas of the business.

Rework your goals and set out to achieve them

Change in the workplace can be daunting and leave you feeling directionless. When your environment changes, it is to be expected that some of your career goals will also need to adjust. This can help you to shift your focus and set you on a new direction to achieve them. Take the time to rediscover yourself and find out what you would like to achieve in your professional career.

Communication is key

Communication is always essential in the workplace, especially when you face change. Make sure you stay in regular communication with your manager and team to ensure everyone is on the same page. A tip when working remotely is to use video chat when calling your colleagues so you feel more connected.

During your meetings with your manager, talk through any concerns you have so you can work through them together.

As Lucia Priscilla Halim, Senior Consultant - Human Resources at Robert Walters Indonesia, puts it, "Change may force you out of your comfort zone, but it can be an opportunity to provide additional value to your organisation while developing personally and professionally."
