Senior Legal Counsel (Mining)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Legal Counsel (Mining) to join a prominent organisation based in Jakarta, offering you the chance to make a significant impact within the mining sector. This role is ideal for someone who has previously worked as a lawyer and possesses substantial in-house experience within the mining industry. You will be at the forefront of providing expert legal guidance on complex mining operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting business growth through your deep understanding of both legal frameworks and commercial objectives.

What you'll do:

As a Senior Legal Counsel (Mining) based in Jakarta, you will play an integral part in guiding the organisation through the complexities of the mining sector’s legal landscape. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve providing strategic counsel on regulatory matters affecting exploration and production activities while ensuring that all contractual arrangements align with both business goals and compliance obligations. You will work collaboratively with various departments to address operational challenges from a legal perspective—whether it’s navigating new legislative developments or managing stakeholder expectations during negotiations.

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice on all aspects of mining operations, including exploration, extraction, processing, and export activities to ensure full compliance with local and international regulations.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts such as joint ventures, supply agreements, land use arrangements, and service contracts relevant to the mining sector.
  • Monitor changes in mining legislation and regulatory requirements, proactively advising internal teams on potential impacts and necessary adjustments to operational practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, finance, health and safety, and external consultants to deliver integrated legal solutions that support business objectives.
  • Manage relationships with government authorities, regulatory bodies, and external counsel to facilitate smooth licensing processes and resolve any legal disputes efficiently.
  • Develop and implement robust risk management strategies tailored to the unique challenges of the mining industry, safeguarding company interests at every stage of project development.
  • Support corporate governance initiatives by preparing board materials, ensuring statutory compliance, and maintaining accurate records of all legal matters related to mining activities.
  • Lead or participate in due diligence exercises for mergers, acquisitions, or divestments involving mining assets or companies.
  • Deliver training sessions to internal stakeholders on key legal topics such as anti-bribery laws, environmental regulations, and contract management best practices.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal policies and procedures by incorporating lessons learned from past projects and staying abreast of industry trends.

What you bring:

The ideal candidate for this Senior Legal Counsel Mining position brings a wealth of practical experience from both private practice as an ex-lawyer and from time spent working in-house within leading organisations operating in the mining sector. Your background should reflect not only technical proficiency but also an ability to connect with others—whether it’s mentoring junior staff members or collaborating closely with operational teams on site. You are known for your reliability under pressure; colleagues can depend on you for thoughtful analysis even when faced with tight timelines or evolving regulatory landscapes.

  • Single contributor role handling end-to-end legal matters.
  • Demonstrated experience as a qualified lawyer with significant post-qualification experience gained both in private practice (preferably at a reputable law firm) and as an in-house counsel within the mining industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of Indonesian mining laws and regulations as well as familiarity with international best practices governing mineral resources development.
  • Proven ability to draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements specific to mining operations including joint ventures, procurement contracts, land access deals, and off-take agreements.
  • Strong track record of managing regulatory compliance issues related to environmental protection, occupational health & safety standards, permitting processes, and community relations within the context of large-scale extractive projects.
  • Excellent communication skills enabling you to explain intricate legal concepts clearly to non-legal audiences while building trust-based relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Experience handling dispute resolution processes such as litigation or arbitration involving mining-related matters either directly or through coordination with external counsel.
  • A collaborative approach that emphasises teamwork, empathy towards colleagues’ perspectives, willingness to share knowledge openly within the department or wider business units.
  • High level of organisational skills allowing you to manage multiple priorities simultaneously without compromising attention to detail or deadlines.
  • Commitment to ethical conduct demonstrated by adherence to professional codes of practice alongside personal integrity when dealing with sensitive information or conflicts of interest.
