Our client, a leading player in the sugar plantation industry, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Legal to join their team. This senior leadership role will oversee all legal operations within the company, ensuring compliance, and managing potential legal challenges in a rapidly evolving industry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the legal landscape of the company, providing strategic advice to the executive management team on a variety of business matters.

What you'll do:

As Head of Legal, you will be at the forefront of all legal operations within the company. Your role will involve developing and implementing legal strategies that align with our business objectives. You will draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts while ensuring compliance with various laws and regulations. Your expertise in labour and employment law will be crucial in advising on related matters. In addition to these responsibilities, you will also manage potential litigation cases involving the company. As a leader, you will establish and guide a high-performing legal team while providing strategic advice to our executive management team.

  • Oversee all legal operations for the company, including regulatory compliance, permits, and licenses.
  • Develop and implement legal strategies to support the company’s business objectives.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with local, national, and international laws and regulations.
  • Advise on labor and employment law matters.
  • Oversee and manage any potential litigation cases involving the company.
  • Establish and lead a high-performing legal team.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to the executive management team.


What you bring:

As our ideal Head of Legal candidate, you bring a wealth of experience from your 15-20 years of post-qualification experience (PQE), particularly within corporate or commercial law. Your strong understanding of regulatory requirements in the agricultural sector coupled with your proven experience in contract negotiation makes you an asset to our team. Your excellent leadership skills enable you to build strong teams capable of handling complex legal issues. Your ability to provide clear, concise advice sets you apart as does your strong communication skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent; Master’s degree or additional legal qualifications preferred.
  • 15-20 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) with a significant portion in corporate or commercial law.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance in the agricultural sector.
  • Proven experience in contract negotiation and management.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills.
  • Ability to manage complex legal issues and provide clear, concise legal advice.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
